TONKAZ, T., E. DOGAN and R. KOCYIGIT, 2010. Impact of temperature change and elevated carbon dioxide on winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown under semi-arid conditions. Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 16: 565-575 A study was conducted to determine effects of changed daily maximum, minimum, and elevated CO2 levels on winter wheat yield and yield components. Treatments included 0 ± 2, 4, and 60C in daily maximum and minimum temperatures, and 380, 420, 460, and 500 ppm elevated CO2 levels. CERES-Wheat model was utilized for simulations and results were used for graphical and statistical analysis. Simulations showed that change in both temperature affected yield and all simulated physiological parameters. Results indicated that when both temperatures increased by 60C, yield decreased 30%, while 60C decrease in temperatures increased yield by 37% (about 5000 kg ha-1). The same effect was observed on the other simulated parameters such as biomass, 1000 seed weight....etc. However effects of both temperature changes were not equally divided. Daily maximum temperatures were affecting simulated parameters more than minimum temperatures. On the other hand, elevated CO2 levels also positively affected yield, grain number, leaf area, and biomass. While, elevated CO2 levels reduced harvest index and evapotranspiration but did not had any effect on flowering date, maturity, and 1 000 seed weight. Every 40 ppm increase in CO2 level increased yields about 150 kg ha -1 in all elevated CO2 treatments.

Individual and interactive effects of elevated carbon dioxide and ozone on tropical wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars with special emphasis on ROS generation and activation of antioxidant defence system.

The effects of elevated CO2 and O3, singly and in combination were investigated on various physiological, biochemical and yield parameters of two locally grown wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars (HUW-37 and K-9107) in open top chambers (OTCs). Elevated CO2 stimulated photosynthetic rate (Ps) and Fv/Fm ratio and reduced the stomatal conductance (gs). Reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidati...

Effects of TiO2 nanoparticles on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings cultivated under super-elevated and normal CO2 conditions

Concerns over the potential risks of nanomaterials to ecosystem have been raised, as it is highly possible that nanomaterials could be released to the environment and result in adverse effects on living organisms. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the main greenhouse gases. The level of CO2 keeps increasing and subsequently causes a series of environmental problems, especially for agricultural cro...

Comparison of the effects of symmetric and asymmetric temperature elevation and CO2 enrichment on yield and evapotranspiration of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Under the changing climate, asymmetric warming pattern would be more likely during day and night time, instead of symmetric one. Concurrently, the growth responses and water use of plants may be different compared with those estimated based on symmetric warming. In this work, it was compared with the effects of symmetric (ETs) and asymmetric (ETa) elevation of temperature alone, and in interact...

Future CO2 concentrations, though not warmer temperatures, enhance wheat photosynthesis temperature responses.

The temperature dependence of C3 photosynthesis is known to vary according to the growth environment. Atmospheric CO2 concentration and temperature are predicted to increase with climate change. To test whether long-term growth in elevated CO2 and temperature modifies photosynthesis temperature response, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was grown in ambient CO2 (370 micromol mol(-1)) and elevated C...

In this study Mixed structural covariance, Path and Cultivation Value analyses and the CERES-Wheat crop model were used to evaluate vegetation and yield component variation affecting yield potential between different highlatitude (> 60° N lat.) and mid-European (< 60° N lat.) spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes currently cultivated in southern Finland. Path modeling results from this ...
